Why is south central texas such a racist place to live?

I've lived in many states (admittedly not too many in the south), but I've found the hill country of texas to be the most vile, uneducated, racist place I've ever been. Is there something inherently different in that part of the country, apart from inbreeding, ignorance and stupidity that fosters a culture of hate? I've only seen the results, but I don't know the cause. If you can enlighten me as to why, I'd certainly appreciate it.
