Why are Pro Choice Republicans not considered conservatives.?

I am a die hard Republican. I am also pro choice on the abortion issue. At local Republican events, people say to me, "You are a moderate then." I take exception to that. I don't consider myself to be a moderate at all. I believe in lower taxes, less government, and individual freedom. Those seem like conservative principles to me. I don't think that the pro life point of view is conservative at all. To me there is nothing conservative about interfering in a difficult personal decision that is between a woman and her doctor. I consider myself a conservative in the mold of Barry Goldwater. Goldwater was known as "Mr. Conservative." He was also pro choice on abortion. Would he be considered a moderate today? Why is it that those inbreeds in the Christian Right and the Moral Majority have taken over the Republican Party?
